Kitchen design by Vieve Interiors

A home’s kitchen is often referred to as “the heart” of the home. It’s a special space where family meals are prepared, and friends gather over exotic wines and fabulous charcuterie. That is, if you have a kitchen that exudes luxury. An ordinary kitchen no longer does the trick—you’re in need of a kitchen with all the latest and greatest design features to create an inviting and functional space that draws you in and makes you want to stay a while. Check out these 12 kitchen remodeling ideas that will show you exactly how to remodel an average kitchen to turn it into a high-end kitchen oasis.

1. Large windows

Large windows will do wonders for your kitchen including creating the sense of more space and offering a great view to the outdoors. But more importantly, large windows also bring in a ton of natural light which can help boost your mood, improve your overall well being, and increase productivity. Not to mention, a newly designed kitchen looks spectacular in natural light!

2. A CUSTOM HOOD

The range hood is often the focal point of a kitchen since it’s typically large and protrudes further than your upper cabinets. To add a luxurious touch, use that space to create a custom unique design by choosing a hood insert and blower instead of an all-in-one hood which allows you to build around it–that could be custom cabinetry, a plaster hood, wood beam mantel, or whatever you can dream up.

3. Panel-ready appliances

For a seamless look across your kitchen, select “panel-ready” appliances (like your dishwasher, wine fridge, or ice maker) so your cabinet maker can customize them to match your cabinets so they are virtually hidden for a high-end look. And while you’re at it, opt for a counter-depth refrigerator and freezer combo. Unlike a standard-size model, counter-depth fridges are virtually flush with counters and cabinets, making it a low-profile option. While counter-depth refrigerator/freezers are about 9 to 10 inches less deep than a standard-sized fridge, they can be wider and taller for increased capacity. This kitchen remodel tip can also give you an opportunity to add a unique and special design detail to your new luxury kitchen.

4. A chef cooktop or range

Upgrading the functionality of your kitchen is just as important as upgrading the design. A luxury kitchen will always have upgraded appliances that make cooking for the whole family or even a giant dinner party more enjoyable. Choose a new chef cooktop or range to sleeken the look of your space. A chef cooktop can be installed almost anywhere in your kitchen, and is customizable in terms of its size, number of burners, griddle or grill, knobs and/or buttons, etc. Most brands even have custom colors! A range is a stovetop with an attached oven(s). For a more in-depth description of the two options, check out this Forbes article.

5. Walk-in pantry

Nothing is more luxurious to me than a walk-in. In my humble opinion, a true kitchen oasis should always have a walk-in pantry that provides all your kitchen goodies with a designated space. Make sure your walk-in has adequate shelving and lighting, along with an organizational system so you can easily find what you need, when you need it. These minimalist labels from Amazon are the perfect way to add a little luxury to your pantry.

 6. A beverage cooler drawer

This kitchen remodel idea is one of my favorite must-haves, especially for someone who loves to entertain, or always has a house full of kids who swing by after school. Depending on size, a beverage cooler drawer can hold (and keep cold) up to 120 extra drinks for any occasion!

7. Soft-close drawer glides and hinges

This is something that every kitchen (at any budget) should have these days! A soft-close drawer or hinge is exactly like it sounds—a drawer or hinge that slowly closes on its own. Soft-close drawers and cabinetry have so many benefits: they are less noisy; kids (and adults) are less likely to get their fingers trapped or smashed when closing them; and, since they are slow-closing, delicate glassware and appliances are far less likely to break or be damaged than with a self-close drawer or hinge. We love this quiet sign you are in a newly renovated kitchen!

8. Double trash pullout

A double trash pullout is an absolute must-have in a luxury kitchen. Not only is the trash completely hidden (as it should be), but the double trash containers allow for super easy recycling and less trips to the outside garbage cans—a much needed feature if you're hosting a party or lots of holiday guests. To double-down on functionality in your classy kitchen, place your cutting boards nearby for extra easy clean up!

9. Spice drawer insert

When I’ve completed a luxury kitchen remodel, you can almost guarantee I’ve installed a spice drawer insert so my client can easily see and grab their spices while cooking. If you haven’t noticed yet, I love organization, and a spice drawer insert like the one below, is the perfect way to get organized in the kitchen!

10. A coffee station or built-in coffee maker

With work-from-home jobs here to stay, this kitchen remodel tip for 2023 is a must. Create a coffee station with a pullout tray in a cabinet or appliance garage to hold your coffee machine, cups, beans, and other brewing supplies. Better yet, add a built-in coffee maker like this one by Miele so you can make high-quality, personalized coffee drinks from the comfort of your own kitchen.

11. Appliance garage

An appliance garage is a place to hide small appliances, like your blender and toaster. As with your refrigerator, trash pull-out, and beverage cooler, your appliance garage can seamlessly blend in with your cabinetry for a cohesive look throughout your entire kitchen. Check out this clever appliance garage by Chris Loves Julia. The appliance garage helps save you countertop space and avoids a cluttered look, keeping your kitchen looking like your dream space.

12. Nugget ice maker

Last, but certainly not least, in our kitchen remodeling ideas is to purchase a nugget ice maker! We love this U-line ice maker that comes in stainless steel or panel ready. Talk about feeling like you’re at the spa when you pour yourself a fruit-infused water over nugget ice. Plus, this rapidly-growing-in-popularity ice maker is absolutely perfect for entertaining!

5 Home Organization Musts to get your Home Clean and Inviting for Spring

With the inevitable buildup of clutter, Spring is always a great time to declutter and get organized! To help you, we’ve put together our best home organization tips to get every area of your home clean and inviting for Spring.

Clutter. That seven-letter word drives me absolutely nuts! How about you? Even though I keep my house as tidy as possible, in the age of Instagram ads and Amazon at our fingertips, it’s easy for me to amass more than I need. With the inevitable buildup of clutter (que my baby, Levi, as he pulls some pans and Tupperware out of the cupboard) when Spring comes around, I’m ready to declutter and get organized! To help you do the same, I’ve put together my best home organization tips for each area of your home.

Begin by decluttering your home

Before we get into our organizing ideas for Spring, here are a few quick home organization tips to declutter your home.

  1. Create a plan and declutter one room at a time. Sounds obvious, I know. But how many times have you gotten bored or distracted in room #1 and then moved onto room #2 before finishing room #1, only to now have two messy rooms on your hands? We’ve all done it. So create a solid plan for what room you will tackle first, second, and so on. Make sure to also plan the when and how you will declutter.

  2. Sort things into three categories. Use three large size bins labeled, “keep”, “toss”, and “donate” and quickly sort through your things one by one. Pro tip: avoid creating double the work for yourself with a “maybe” pile.. If you’re having trouble deciding whether to keep or donate something, I love Marie Kondo’s method of asking if it brings you joy or not. I also find it helpful to remind myself that something I’ve had tucked away for months might be happily used by someone else everyday. If something still brings you joy and you’re not ready to say goodbye, that's OK—keep it. We have great Spring cleaning ideas for organizing down below!

  3. Keep a healthy mindset. Decluttering can be very overwhelming. Make sure to schedule enough time but not too much time that you get burned out. Take breaks, be patient with the process and patient with yourself, and most importantly, reward yourself when it's all over!

Now, it's time to get organized

After you’ve gotten rid of the clutter, it's time to set yourself (and your home) up for success in the future with these Spring cleaning ideas for organizing.

Entryway

Let’s kick off our organizing ideas for Spring in the entryway. Ideally, the best way to organize your entryway is with a beautiful entry console table coupled with a custom-made coat closet. But, with or without a great coat closet or console table, adding a few hooks in your entryway is an easy way to keep things organized and off the floor. That way you can quickly grab or drop off your coat or back when you’re running in or out of the house. These simple, modern hooks from Bsdonte come in several beautiful finishes like this rich walnut color that we love, as well as a pretty beech, and a classic white.

Laundry Room

Home and Garden said it best, “Organizing a laundry room isn't just about use of space, it's about ensuring efficiency.” That—and because I need a beautiful space to inspire me to do laundry—is why the laundry room is one of my favorite rooms of the house to organize. Check out this Gabrielle Organization System from Pottery Barn. It is a super stylish way to make functional use of your laundry room wall space. Get all 6 laundry attachments (like the rack to hang towels and sweaters, shelving to store frequently used items, and laundry hampers) or pick and choose the pieces you need

Kitchen

The kitchen is arguably the one room in your home where you can’t skip out on a spring cleaning and organization session! One of our favorite organization tools in the kitchen is this SpaceAid Spice Drawer Organizer. This is something we always incorporate in our custom kitchen designs. We love that this set comes with the bottles and labels all ready to go for a clean minimalist look! If you don’t have room in a drawer, this Pull-Out Spice Rack is a great option for an upper cabinet.

Bedroom

One thing that I really dislike is an overstuffed closet. That means that items I’d like to keep, but don’t have use for at the moment, have to make their way under the bed. To keep the items dust-free, I use these Rubbermaid Under the Bed Wheeled Storage Boxes. Note, it’s important to measure the clearance under your bed to make sure these work. If your bed is lower, you could utilize these Underbed Bags instead.

Bathroom

Last, but not least in our organizing ideas for Spring, we recommend these Stackable Clear Plastic Organizer Drawers for your bathroom. I’ve tested them and loved them! They are perfect for organizing cosmetics and beauty supplies, first aid kits, and much more. I actually keep these drawers under my kitchen sink, proving they are great for organizing many different spaces in your home.

3 Reasons Why You Should Remodel Your Home Now

Whether you recently purchased a fixer-upper, are looking to sell your home, or want the latest and greatest interior design features, now is the time to start your home renovation project. Discover the top three reasons why interior designers believe you should remodel your home now!

Whether you recently purchased a fixer-upper, are looking to sell your home in the near future, or simply want to live in a home with the latest and greatest design features, we believe there's no time like the present to start your home renovation project. But should you remodel now in 2022/2023? Business Insider says that the other side of the housing boom is here: home-renovation projects. In this post-pandemic climate, people all over have realized the value of a comfortable home environment. Here are the top three reasons you should remodel your home now and not wait to create that cozy, sacred space that you crave.

1. Materials could be unavailable in years to come.

One of the biggest motivators for remodeling your home now with the talk of a coming economic decline is a likely shortage of materials in years to come. Prepping Planet stated that if you are planning to renovate your house then it is a good idea to buy the materials before a recession comes. During a recession, these construction materials will not have the same demand, which in theory should make their prices lower, but the truth is that most companies will simply stop selling until the market bounces back. Furthermore, we are still seeing shipping delays, so the sooner you can get your materials ordered, the better!

2. Buyers will expect homes to be in tip-top shape.

Selling your home before a recession may be the perfect opportunity to liquidate your equity and build up your nest egg. But today’s housing market is tricky. While some homes in Orange County are still selling over asking price, other sellers are forced to accept offers hundreds of thousands of dollars less than asking price. The bottom line is this: Buyers feel that if they’re going to be paying the full asking price or above, the house should be worth it. Rightfully so. That means that a seller’s home must be in tip-top shape! Read on to hear more about the top spaces to renovate.

3. Home renovations are an investment.

There are a number of reasons to remodel your home including personal taste or comfort, to fix an issue like the electrical wiring, or simply to improve the efficiency and functionality of your home. But the #1 reason to remodel your home is to increase your home’s value.

The areas of your home that will increase your home’s value and provide you with the greatest return on investment (ROI) are kitchens, home offices, and outdoor spaces. We also believe that accessory dwelling units (ADUs or granny flats) could also have made the list, but we will tackle that at a later time.

The Kitchen

One survey says Americans spend more than an average of 400 hours a year in the kitchen. It’s where we start the day with a morning coffee, where we commune with friends over a snack and a spindrift, and where we come together with family at the end of the day to make a meal and connect. Hence a kitchen remodel will provide the greatest ROI compared to any other room renovation.  An upgraded high-end kitchen will clearly appeal to homeowners and home buyers alike. When remodeling your kitchen, it's vital to keep a few key things in mind:

  • Design an open layout for cooking and entertaining so family and friends can easily gather.

  • Don’t forget the “work triangle” when spacing your alliances.

  • Opt for chef-grade appliances and smart-home features.

  • Choose flooring that will withstand wear and tear, but also flow nicely with the rest of your home.

  • Add some personality in the kitchen: splash in a pop of color with painted cabinetry, go big with impressive countertops, or choose a fun tile pattern for the backsplash or flooring.

  • Hide the trash, recycling and refrigerator behind cabinet doors for a high-end custom look.

  • Install larger pantries and hidden storage spaces to maximize functionality.

The Home Office

More than a third of U.S. households reported working from home more frequently than before the pandemic, so home offices are in higher demand than ever before. A home office remodel can also be a tax write-off (don’t forget to consult your tax accountant first ;). But keep in mind that designing an efficient and aesthetically pleasing home office requires careful planning and a greater investment than just adding a desk and computer to an empty bedroom. There are a number of design elements to consider when putting together a home office:

  • Lighting—what will function best for your work? Is it a task light for detailed work, bright all over light to energize you, or lighting that illuminates your face for your frequent Zoom meetings? If you work best in day light, consider installing large windows or doors to the outside to help let in more natural light.

  • Noise—are you hosting meetings regularly while next to a room of noisy kids? Explore all your noise-canceling options like strategically placed paneling or thicker drywall.

  • Technology—aside from the usual office must-haves (computer, printer/scanner, extra monitors, etc.), ask yourself if you need a specific sound system or speakers, video equipment, special charging docs, etc. to get your job done efficiently.

  • Use of space—to avoid a cluttered look, make good use of your space with built-in bookshelves, hidden storage, and functional furniture.

  • Comfort—choose high-end furniture that’s comfortable and promotes healthy ergonomics.

  • Add plants—I’m a huge fan of adding a little life and color to your home office with house plants. Plus, plants can help relieve stress and improve your mood!

The Outdoor Space

Curb appeal will always be one of the top factors in providing significant value to your home. Before we discuss major exterior renovations consider this: homes with well-kept lawns and professional landscaping sell for 7% more than similar homes with exterior blemishes or unattractive front yards. That’s a huge percentage just for maintaining a mowed lawn. Imagine how much your home value would increase if you invested in the following:

  • Lush, beautiful flowers and trees

  • An inviting pathway and pavers

  • A stunning new garage door

  • New larger windows

  • A new and improved deck or fence

  • New siding, brick or stone veneers, or smooth stucco

  • Intentional lighting to add a decorative touch or highlight architectural features

Or take it up a notch with a new…

  • Pool/jacuzzi

  • Firepit

  • Entertainments areas with comfortable furniture

  • Outdoor kitchen and bar

  • Solar panels

  • Patio doors

  • Outdoor shower

  • Accessible dwelling units (AUD’s or granny flats)

Even though remodeling these areas of your home will give you the greatest ROI, that return will vary greatly based on the materials used, how good the design is and how much you invest. Make sure you hire an interior designer who knows the market, and who will not only listen to what you are looking for but can help you make the best decisions for your remodel. And most importantly, remember that the greatest return from investing in your home is the happiness you get from loving where you live every day. Why wait to create the home that you love when you could start living in your dream home now?

How to Decorate Your Orange County Home Using Masculine Interior Design Style

Every now and then, you come across an interior design style that’s strikingly different in the best way. It’s bold, it’s moody, it’s functional—it’s masculine interior design style! Check out our 5 tips to achieve this dramatic design style that is perfect for a game room, a sexy bar, or a cozy guest room.

Vieve Interiors Masculine Interior Design - matching bird photos with dual nightstands and lamps

Bedroom designed and styled by Viève Interiors

If you’re anything like me, you’re following a slew of interior designers on social media and blogs who share images of airy designs with soft color pallets. But every now and then, you come across an image that’s strikingly different in the best way. It’s bold, it’s moody, it’s functional, it’s masculine interior design style.

What is masculine interior design style? It encompasses simple lines, strong materials and comfort. It can even be elegant, industrial, modern, contemporary, or bright. But the best description we have heard of masculine interior design style is this: “a bold, yet functional [design] trend which takes inspiration from the lifestyle of a man”. As with women, no two men are the same, so masculine interior design style is definitely up for interpretation and personalization. But with all design styles, there are some characteristics that can help inspire you to create a space that has a masculine flare.

Before we get into it, we wanted to point out that using masculine interior design style doesn’t necessarily mean you are decorating a bachelor pad. This dramatic design style is perfect for a game room, a sexy bar, or a cozy guest room. Even if you’re set on a more feminine feel, incorporating elements of masculine design is a good way to balance more feminine curves or floral patterns in your home for a look that feels right for all family and friends.

1. Choose rich, deep and dark room colors.

One of the most prominent aspects of a masculine room is the color scheme. Usually, masculine design style features darker hues of blue and green, plus varying shades of gray and brown, as well as black. The key is rich, deep, dark colors with decorative accents in lighter colors to create contrast. This creates a dramatic vibe. You can easily incorporate these colors using interior paint, decorating home fabrics or small accessories.

2. Accent the room with strong materials.

Another key defining characteristic of masculine design style is to incorporate materials including metal, wood, stone and leather. These materials naturally exude a more masculine energy and also tend to come in more masculine and neutral colors. Focus on key pieces of furniture like a leather chair or sofa, the bed frame, or our personal favorite, an impressive, live-edge dining table. You could also consider adding these elements into other parts of your home like sky beams, light fixtures, and appliances.

3. Design for comfort and functionality.

Any good interior designer will make sure to balance the aesthetics of a room with functionality. And when it comes to masculine interior design style, it is pretty evident that comfort and functionality are at the forefront. You won’t see a lot of wasted space or nick knacks in this design style—every desk, bookshelf, chair, sofa, bar cart, pool table, or decorative box, etc. has a purpose.

4. Focus on simple and clean lines.

Effortless simplicity is at the heart of this design trend. And clean, simple lines are the key. Masculine spaces have very clean, tailored lines.  In addition to using more linear and simplified furniture, you can tie a masculine room together with the clean lines of your flooring, drapery, bookcases, wall finishings, backsplashes, the tub or shower, and so much more.

5. Don’t forget the finishing touches.

Along with tip number three, the finishing touches are really what make a space your own. Don’t forget to hang artwork, prints, mirrors and shelving that speaks to you. Fill in empty spaces with meaningful sculptures or oversized plants. With masculine interior design style, the finishing touches are often inspired by nature, so look for pieces like the matching bird photos we used in this Orange County bedroom!

How to Design Your Fall Tablescape in 8 Easy Steps

It’s that time! Get out your favorite fall decor and give your dining room table a makeover. Whether you're decorating for everyday or a special occasion, these 8 easy steps to design a fall tablescape will completely transform the look of your table!

Designing a fall tablescape in 2022

After this extreme heat wave in Newport Beach, California, I am more excited than usual for fall to arrive! Not only does fall bring cooler weather, beautiful autumn leaves, and pumpkin spice lattes, but it also is the perfect excuse to get out my favorite fall decor (and shop for some new items). What’s the first place I start my little seasonal home makeover? My dining room table.

A beautiful fall tablescape can really transform the look and feel of your home. It’s especially fun to decorate your table for big events like Halloween or Thanksgiving, or even an intimate dinner party. We’ve put together 8 easy steps to help you design the perfect fall tablescape. While these tips may be tailored for fall, these 8 easy steps can help you design a beautiful tablescape for any occasion or season!

1. Determine your color palette

The first step in designing your fall tablescape is to choose your color palette. You can opt for a theme like traditional fall colors (orange, neutrals, maroon, navy, ivory, gold) or nature-themed colors (variations of greens, browns, rusty orange)...

…or you can choose a more bold and moody option like deep, darker shades of purple, green, black, and orange.

Alternatively, you can pick a modern and simplified color palette—think black and white with a pop of color, or an all-white and gold table.

Whichever design style you decide to go with, make sure to choose colors that complement each other. We’ve included a design color wheel to help remind you of what colors go well together.

2. Choose your main focal point

While beautiful centerpieces are guaranteed to steal the show at your next event, you don’t always have to make a big centerpiece the main focal point of your fall tablescape. In fact, something more simple like a patterned napkin, seasonal pumpkin, or single-stem flowers could do the trick. The best way to decide is to think about the vibe you want to create. Is it a soothing, simplified, modern look that you’re going for? Or an all-out “more is more” show stopping display? We love looks on all ends of the spectrum, so choose what speaks to you. Here are a few designs to help inspire you!

3. Go for a layered look

How do you create that high-class designer fall tablescape? Layers! Start with a tablecloth, and then continue to add more layers—table runners, placemats, and a variety of dinnerware. Then add napkins, place cards, gifts for guests, and get creative with other decor items like cutting boards, themed tchotchkes or twinkle lights for a unique touch.

We’re swooning over this Thanksgiving tablescape by Denby Pottery. Notice how a pop of blue is layered with neutral colors. And then they topped the layered dinnerware with a mini cutting board and miniature pumpkin for each place setting—adorable!

We also love this totally eclectic table design that layers…well, everything! Check out Leaf Home Blooms fall collection of fabric pieces, candles, dinnerware, glassware, and much more. We love how they added layers and varying heights with a cake pedestal.

4. Mix and match

We use this tip in almost every design blog we write—and that’s because it works. To avoid looking matchy-matchy or worse, outdated, try mixing and matching types of dinnerware, flatware, fabrics, patterns and materials. It’s easy to create balance in a tablescape because of the repetition of items so mix up those materials with wood, copper, glass, and various textures, sizes, heights, etc. We love the way these two fall tablescapes came out!

5. Bring in a little nature

During fall, pumpkins are everywhere! While we absolutely love decorating with all different varieties, colors and sizes of pumpkins during fall, there are a ton of other ways you can bring a little nature into your fall tablescape. Decorate with traditional flower centerpieces or consider lengthier pieces of garland, eucalyptus, or even a mixture of plants, flowers and pinecones for long tables.

For something more out-of-the box, try decorating with fall fruits!

Depending on the mood of the occasion, we recommend adding sprigs, leaves and/or other fresh or dried plants on top of plates instead of decorating with huge centerpieces.

6. Use items of varying heights

Tip number six is one of our favorite decorating tips—and it’s especially helpful when decorating your table or other smaller spaces. Choosing decor items with varying heights helps move your eye, adds interest, and most importantly, makes your table look and feel less busy. In other words, you can fit more on your table without compromising your design style.

Picking candles and glassware with varying heights is not your only option. In fact, one of our favorite ways of adding height variety is through floral arrangements! An airy arrangement can add the verticality you’re looking for without blocking the view of the person across the table.

7. Choose your glassware

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's important to remember to always set out a water goblet and a wine glass for your guests. If you are planning a dinner party, you may even want to consider a third glass or cup for cocktails, mocktails or coffee. The glassware can really add a little glamor to the table. Personally, we love pairing glassware with copper cups in the fall (moscow mule anyone?) and mixing and matching the style of glassware itself.

8. Incorporate candles

Nothing creates that fall feeling as much as a cinnamon-scented or pumpkin-scented candle—at least for me! And candles on a fall tablescape can completely change the mood of the room. Decorative candles create ambiance and warmth, relieve stress, and signify a celebration or romance. Bonus: candles also help add layers, depth and varying heights to your table!
