How to Design Your Fall Tablescape in 8 Easy Steps
It’s that time! Get out your favorite fall decor and give your dining room table a makeover. Whether you're decorating for everyday or a special occasion, these 8 easy steps to design a fall tablescape will completely transform the look of your table!
After this extreme heat wave in Newport Beach, California, I am more excited than usual for fall to arrive! Not only does fall bring cooler weather, beautiful autumn leaves, and pumpkin spice lattes, but it also is the perfect excuse to get out my favorite fall decor (and shop for some new items). What’s the first place I start my little seasonal home makeover? My dining room table.
A beautiful fall tablescape can really transform the look and feel of your home. It’s especially fun to decorate your table for big events like Halloween or Thanksgiving, or even an intimate dinner party. We’ve put together 8 easy steps to help you design the perfect fall tablescape. While these tips may be tailored for fall, these 8 easy steps can help you design a beautiful tablescape for any occasion or season!
1. Determine your color palette
The first step in designing your fall tablescape is to choose your color palette. You can opt for a theme like traditional fall colors (orange, neutrals, maroon, navy, ivory, gold) or nature-themed colors (variations of greens, browns, rusty orange)...
…or you can choose a more bold and moody option like deep, darker shades of purple, green, black, and orange.
Alternatively, you can pick a modern and simplified color palette—think black and white with a pop of color, or an all-white and gold table.
Whichever design style you decide to go with, make sure to choose colors that complement each other. We’ve included a design color wheel to help remind you of what colors go well together.
2. Choose your main focal point
While beautiful centerpieces are guaranteed to steal the show at your next event, you don’t always have to make a big centerpiece the main focal point of your fall tablescape. In fact, something more simple like a patterned napkin, seasonal pumpkin, or single-stem flowers could do the trick. The best way to decide is to think about the vibe you want to create. Is it a soothing, simplified, modern look that you’re going for? Or an all-out “more is more” show stopping display? We love looks on all ends of the spectrum, so choose what speaks to you. Here are a few designs to help inspire you!
3. Go for a layered look
How do you create that high-class designer fall tablescape? Layers! Start with a tablecloth, and then continue to add more layers—table runners, placemats, and a variety of dinnerware. Then add napkins, place cards, gifts for guests, and get creative with other decor items like cutting boards, themed tchotchkes or twinkle lights for a unique touch.
We’re swooning over this Thanksgiving tablescape by Denby Pottery. Notice how a pop of blue is layered with neutral colors. And then they topped the layered dinnerware with a mini cutting board and miniature pumpkin for each place setting—adorable!
We also love this totally eclectic table design that layers…well, everything! Check out Leaf Home Blooms fall collection of fabric pieces, candles, dinnerware, glassware, and much more. We love how they added layers and varying heights with a cake pedestal.
4. Mix and match
We use this tip in almost every design blog we write—and that’s because it works. To avoid looking matchy-matchy or worse, outdated, try mixing and matching types of dinnerware, flatware, fabrics, patterns and materials. It’s easy to create balance in a tablescape because of the repetition of items so mix up those materials with wood, copper, glass, and various textures, sizes, heights, etc. We love the way these two fall tablescapes came out!
5. Bring in a little nature
During fall, pumpkins are everywhere! While we absolutely love decorating with all different varieties, colors and sizes of pumpkins during fall, there are a ton of other ways you can bring a little nature into your fall tablescape. Decorate with traditional flower centerpieces or consider lengthier pieces of garland, eucalyptus, or even a mixture of plants, flowers and pinecones for long tables.
For something more out-of-the box, try decorating with fall fruits!
Depending on the mood of the occasion, we recommend adding sprigs, leaves and/or other fresh or dried plants on top of plates instead of decorating with huge centerpieces.
6. Use items of varying heights
Tip number six is one of our favorite decorating tips—and it’s especially helpful when decorating your table or other smaller spaces. Choosing decor items with varying heights helps move your eye, adds interest, and most importantly, makes your table look and feel less busy. In other words, you can fit more on your table without compromising your design style.
Picking candles and glassware with varying heights is not your only option. In fact, one of our favorite ways of adding height variety is through floral arrangements! An airy arrangement can add the verticality you’re looking for without blocking the view of the person across the table.
7. Choose your glassware
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's important to remember to always set out a water goblet and a wine glass for your guests. If you are planning a dinner party, you may even want to consider a third glass or cup for cocktails, mocktails or coffee. The glassware can really add a little glamor to the table. Personally, we love pairing glassware with copper cups in the fall (moscow mule anyone?) and mixing and matching the style of glassware itself.
8. Incorporate candles
Nothing creates that fall feeling as much as a cinnamon-scented or pumpkin-scented candle—at least for me! And candles on a fall tablescape can completely change the mood of the room. Decorative candles create ambiance and warmth, relieve stress, and signify a celebration or romance. Bonus: candles also help add layers, depth and varying heights to your table!

Interior Design: Best Tips to Decorate Your Child's Room
Have your kids outgrown their room? Time to redecorate? Here are our top tips on redecorating your child’s room!
Our next blog in the series, “Interior Design: Best Tips to Decorate Your Home” is all about kids! As a child, I remember decorating my room with my mom and being absolutely ecstatic with how it came out—the yellow and blue flowered wallpaper (which I got to help pick out from a wallpaper book), my white desk, and my yellow Crayola crayon fish tank. It was a dream come true. While my mom and I had to wing it, you don’t! We have put together some tips to help you create a functional and beautiful space that your kiddos will absolutely love.
Maximize The Space You Have
Kids spend a lot of time in their rooms, and it’s important to make the most of what you have available. Consider a loft bed to maximize ground space. A desk or a cozy sofa underneath leaves the rest of the room open for play space. Bunk beds like the custom built-in ones we designed in the photo below is a great way to make use of space when decorating for two.
Prioritize Storage
Of course, all those hobbies and interests need some place to go. And no parent likes a messy room, so make it easy for your kids to put things away on their own by prioritizing storage space. Bins on bookshelves, storage crates under the bed, wall hooks, and hangers all work great for organizing ever-evolving toy collections, and clothes they’re quickly outgrowing.
Pro Tip: We find most people don’t properly utilize closet space. A typical builder-grade rod & shelf don’t make good use of the vertical space. In contrast, a thoughtfully laid out closet system with a mix of shelving, drawers, and hanging space is an easy way to organize and hide away your kid’s clothes, and odds and ends. Your designer can help you evaluate your storage needs and design a closet system that is functional for you, whether fully custom or an off-the-shelf option.
Display Space
All kids want to show off their interests, so give them some display space! Some shelves above a desk, a bulletin board or galvanized metal for magnets and pictures gives you an easy and inexpensive way to let your little one decide the feel of their room. Or use inexpensive frames to put up some of their favorite artwork and switch them out periodically.
Have Fun with the Walls
Wallpaper, a mural, or a unique paint treatment is a fun way for your child to express their sense of style. Look for patterns or textures that will grow with them or try easy-on and easy-off wall decals for a quick update that’s easy to switch up. Whether your child loves planes & trains, ballet, or surfing, consider oversized or abstract images of their hobby for a more high-end look. You can also incorporate peel-and-stick cork to give a functional aspect for display as well. You can find it at any local craft store.
Pro tip: The ceiling is a great spot for fun wallpaper too!
Kids change, often
The first thing we always keep in mind when decorating a kid’s room is that children change, and they change fast. As they’re growing, they’re figuring out their hobbies and interests, what they like and don’t like, and those things are going to change many times over the next few years. So, we recommend looking for classic pieces that will stand the test of time and wear and tear for things like dressers and other more permanent pieces. Then sticking with a lower price point for items that you know you will be swapping out later like a child-sized table and chairs. In short: Leave room in your budget to call your designer in a few years when you need to redecorate again!
Here are a few other creative ways to cut costs:
Refurbish old furniture. A vintage piece will not only save on cost but will add character to a space.
Combine an inexpensive ready-made drapery panel with a nice rod and rings.
Refresh rooms with new paint. Paint is one of the best bang-for-your-buck updates you can make.
Check out Target, Ikea, or even Amazon for inexpensive bedding, pillows and/or stuffed animals
Give Them a Space to Escape
Growing up can be tough and we all need to get away from time to time. Work with your child and designer to create a room where they can feel comfortable hanging out with friends or escaping to when they need some alone time! Personalizing your room as a kid is a big part of growing up and expressing individuality, so make sure to involve them as much as they want to be when decorating your kid’s room!

Here is everything you need to know to decorate your home with throw pillows!
Everything You Need to Know to Decorate Your Home with Throw Pillows
Looking for a quick and cost-effective way to transform your living room or bedroom? Add new throw pillows to your sofa, bed or other furniture pieces! Changing up your decorative pillows can change the entire look of a room with very little strain on your wallet (or schedule 😉). Here is everything you need to know to decorate your home with throw pillows!
How to choose the perfect throw pillows?
When shopping for the perfect throw pillows, you’ll want to take into account the colors, textures, patterns, and fabrics in your home. You’ll also want to consider the shapes and sizes of the pillows, what filling you like, and finally, price. The perfect throw pillow should play up your style and tie your room together by using fabrics in complementing colors, and a mix of patterns, textures, and materials.
Pro tip: Think of your throw pillows as accent pieces that can bring character to your space. Aim to mix and match a variety of colors, textures, patterns, materials and sizes. We’ll show you how to do this without making it look like a jumbled mess.
What is the right color for your throw pillows?
The number one thing to think about when picking new throw pillows is color. The wrong color throw pillows can wash out a space or even worse, clash with your decor making the design feel disjointed. It’s important to blend the colors of your throw pillows with the room by repeating the colors that are in your furniture and decor in your pillow scheme. For example, if you’ve chosen bold-colored drapery, make sure to have a few throw pillows in that same color.
It can help to stick to three main colors that complement each other. Since throw pillows are usually one of the last things you or your interior designer will buy or have custom-made, this simple trick will easily balance colors around a room making it feel harmonious and complete.
Pro tip: You don’t necessarily have to match colors exactly. Opting for varying shades of an accent color can look just as lovely. To guarantee your space looks cohesive, stick with a pallet of a few colors that go well together and add in some neutrals for balance.
What patterns, textures and materials should your throw pillows be?
Patterns, textures and materials—oh my! There are so many options available that getting started can be extremely challenging. We’ll walk you through a few interior designer tips in each category to help you feel less overwhelmed.
Patterned Throw Pillows
There are a few ways to mix and match patterns:
Choose patterned pillows that are all within the same color scheme (example: all hues of blue). With this approach, you can choose as many different patterns as you like while still creating a cohesive look.
Pick up to three patterned pillows where each pattern incorporates at least one of the main colors in your space. To help get you going, pick a “lead” pattern that incorporates all of your main colors. Keep in mind that your “lead” pattern can have as many colors as you want in it as long as it contains all of your main colors. From there, you can add two more patterns that have at least one of your main colors in it.
Use patterns of different scale. Example: a large floral could be combined with a medium scale stripe, and a small polka dot or a solid.
Repeat patterns. Example: does your ottoman have a pattern? Try repeating it with a pillow!
Pro tip: Get custom pillows made if you need to!
Textured Throw Pillows
Good news—textured decorative pillows are not hard to come by! A quick Google search will show you a slew of options for any home’s style. Adding in textured throw pillows is a great way to incorporate a tactile element that stimulates your sense of touch in addition to sight. So, how do you mix textured pillows with your patterned pillows? The first rule (really the only rule) of thumb is to stay within your color scheme. Other than that, make sure you love what you get!
Fabrics for your throw pillows
Another way to spice up the look of your home with throw pillows is by mixing and matching materials. This is a way to add another level of interest. In fact, different materials have different textures, so by pulling in a variety of materials you can kill two birds with one stone. Try mixing a leather accent pillow in with other soft cotton pillows for a masculine element or add a velvet pillow in against some linen pillows for a classic lux look. Fabrics for your throw pillows come in many materials including:
Cotton
Microfiber
Suede
Chenille
Velvet
Leather
Polyester
Linen
Satin
Silk
Faux Fur
Wool
Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to buy something bold!
What sizes and shapes of throw pillows should you buy?
If you’re aiming for a more modern interior design style, you’ll want to mix and match the sizes and shapes of your throw pillows. You can choose from:
Round
Rectangular
Square
Tube/Bolster
Try using a long rectangular “lumbar” pillow or bolster pillow in front of some square pillows as an accent on your bed. If you want a more traditional style home, symmetry is key. Take your sofa for example. Whatever pillows you use on the left side of the sofa, you’ll want to make sure to recreate the look on the right side with the exact same pillows. And remember pillows should go from large in the back to smaller in the front.
What inserts should you put in your throw pillows?
Now that you’ve decided what sizes and shapes of throw pillows that you want, it's time to decide what inserts you’d like to buy. This will depend on your personal preference or any allergies among you and your family members. Some common options include:
Feathers
Down
Alternative Down (Polyfill)
Polyester Fiber
Memory Foam
Shredded Memory Foam
Gel
Wool
Kapok Fiber
For a full pros and cons list of the 12 major throw-pillow-filler insert options, check out Types of Pillows Inserts/Fillings – How to Choose the Right One?
How much do throw pillows cost?
According to Home Decor Bliss, “Luxury throw pillows may cost upwards of $50 to $250 or more, especially if custom-made. Throw pillows are often expensive due to the fabric used, shape, and design. It is possible to find inexpensive throw pillows, but the quality of construction, level of design, and comfort may be sacrificed.”
We couldn’t agree more. While spending $250+ on a throw pillow may seem expensive, it is important to remember that quality pillows will last longer and can completely transform a room.
Pro tip: Add in a few custom pillows amongst other more affordable ready-made pillows to elevate your design without breaking the bank.
Where can you shop for the perfect throw pillows?
You can easily find throw pillows in your favorite home-centered retail stores or online. However, if you’re having a hard time finding the perfect pattern or colors to tie your room together, or you still can’t quite figure out how to best mix and match, you can hire an interior designer to help you.

Interior Design: Best Tips to Decorate Your Living Room
Interior design is all about layering and mixing things you love—colors, patterns, furniture, and decor pieces. As one of the most multifunctional spaces in your home, the living room should be designed cohesively to draw you in. Our best design tips for decorating your living room can help make that happen.
Interior design is all about layering and mixing things you love—colors, patterns, furniture, and decor pieces—in a cohesive way and if done well, it will draw you into the space. As one of the most multifunctional spaces in your home (a spot for friends and family to gather, a place to relax, etc.), the living room should be designed to draw you in. Our best design tips for decorating your living room can help make that happen!
When you’re finished reading these interior design tips, don’t forget to check out our Best Tips to Decorate Your Bathroom and 7 Best Tips to Decorate Your Bedroom to pull your whole house together.
Be mindful of the use of space.
Before you get started, think about what you’d like to use your living room for—Entertaining? Lounging? Define its functionality. Then you can start to think about what type of furniture you need to make that happen.
In the picture above, we needed to create a place for the whole family to hang out, so a large sectional sofa was the perfect choice. But with a three-piece chaise sectional like this, there was very little space left for a coffee table. We paired the sofa with a round coffee table, so the family is not bumping into corners as they walk around it. We also took note of the furry family member and opted for carpet tiles that can be easily replaced if the dog ruins any of them instead of replacing a large area rug.
Decorate for comfort.
Our next interior design tip for decorating your living room is this: decorate in a way that feels comfortable to you! At the end of the day, you want to come home to a space that feels good to you, not just what is popular or trendy. The colors and the design style you choose set the mood for your living room, and the furniture you pick determines your physical level of comfort. For this living room, we intentionally picked chairs that not only look great and set a nice casual vibe, but that also feel wonderful to sink into at the end of the day.
Design around the fireplace.
Brace yourself, we have some surprising news: the living room furniture does not always have to point toward a TV... You might find that your living room can be all the more relaxing without one. For the living room space shown above, we made the fireplace instead of the TV our focal point. We hung beautiful artwork above it and incorporated an amazing ottoman coffee table (found at a consignment store) to pull out the darker blues in the artwork and bring in just the right amount of pattern into an otherwise simple space. We also added some classy barrel swivel chairs to give our clients a cozy conversational place to hang out around the fireplace that could also be turned to watch TV when desired.
Get creative with your storage spaces.
One way to make your home look more spacious and sophisticated is to get creative with your storage spaces. For example, we absolutely love the way this custom floating cabinet turned out in our client’s living room! We felt it was the perfect modern touch to contrast with more traditional trim throughout the home. Here are a few other furniture pieces to consider selecting for additional storage space:
Multi-use bench with drawers or a seat that opens up
A storage ottoman for extra blankets or pillows
A coffee table with storage below for reading material or otherwise
An end table with a drawer for remotes or pens, etc.
Mix up and balance your finishes.
A great way to make your home feel like it came straight out of a magazine is to decorate with a mix of finishes. Hold on, hold on—before you start mixing and matching furniture with abandon (which we do recommend over purchasing a matching set of furniture), consider the balance of the finishes around the space. For example, if you introduce a light wood like the dining table in the room above, use that finish again somewhere across the room like we did in the TV console doors. You can’t see it in the photo, but our client has a white console with a black top in their entryway, so we balanced that with the white frame of the TV console. We also added touches of black with the dark coffee table and the dining chairs to balance the black of the TV and the dark wood on the floors.
Make bold statements.
The living room is a great place to make a bold design statement and there are so many ways you can do this!
Take our first photo for example. High contrast of the black brick fireplace in this beautiful white living room makes a bold modern statement which is softened by some pretty muted blues and punctuated with modern angular art.
Here we chose to hang very bold artwork and opted for a bold blue velvet sofa to match.
If you’re looking to make a statement without going too bold, try giving your living room a little pizzazz by painting an accent wall. Here we chose to paint the back of the bookshelves to match the fireplace tile. Then we tied the rug in by adding some custom pillows that pull all the colors together. Which brings us to our next tip…
Use pillows to tie in other decor elements.
Pillows have another important function beyond comfort. Throw pillows can be used to tie other decor elements (like paintings and photographs) in your living room together. Incorporating throw pillows is one of the easiest ways to add style to your living room and can make a dramatic difference in creating a cohesive and complete look. Pro tip: let your throw pillows have their own personality, but make sure to coordinate the colors in the pillows with the colors around the room and vary the scale in the patterns you use. Here we used a large striped mused with a solid as well as a small block print blue pillow.
Complete the look with accessories.
It’s amazing how adding accessories can make your living room feel complete. Here’s a snippet of a family room where we layered the coffee table with a tray, box to hide remotes, books and a few decorative objects that tied together the natural finishes and golden shimmer, all in the same spot. We topped it off with a little greenery to bring the home to life!

10 of the Hottest Trends in Interior Design in Orange County in 2022
Better flow, more time spent at home—a few of the many reasons so many Orange County homes are getting a fresh look this year. From minor uplifts to major remodels, we’ve put together our predictions of the hottest trends in interior design in Orange County in 2022.
10 of the Hottest Trends in Interior Design in Orange County in 2022
A fresh start to the new year, better energy flow, increased endorphins, more time spent at home, the deep need for more harmony and serenity—it’s a long list of reasons why Orange County homes are receiving revamps in 2022. From minor uplifts to major remodels, we’ve put together our predictions of the hottest trends in interior design in Orange County in 2022.
1. Sustainability Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
It’s no surprise that sustainability is one of the top interior design trends in Orange County, California this year. With more people taking ownership in the fight for a sustainable future, you are guaranteed to see an increase in recycled furniture (like vintage rugs), upcycled pieces (think unique artwork), locally made decor from reusable and/or eco-friendly sources, and rapidly renewable natural materials like cork and bamboo.
Another benefit of decorating with sustainability in mind is decreased maintenance costs, reduced utility expenses, and higher returns on your investment. Drought-resistant landscaping and energy-efficient lighting will continue to be in high demand for these exact reasons. Fun fact: the greatest ROI you can receive on your home is switching all your light bulbs to LED lights!
2. Bold Pattern Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
We talk about bold patterns a lot! Why? We love them. Choosing a bold pattern for your wallpaper, tile flooring, accent wall, shower wall, accent rug, or even your headboard or bedding, can change the entire look of your home. This year, we expect to see a lot of bold patterns in black and white. If you’re on a tighter budget, this should be the one area where you splurge!
3. Texture Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
The texture trends in Orange County are as vast as the types of textures around the world–from soft and nubby boucle and velvet to hard and sleek stone and metal. We’ll talk about a few texture trends we expect to see in 2022, but the biggest takeaway is this: adding texture makes a room more dynamic and interesting and is what gives your home that cozy, warm feeling.
The biggest texture trends we expect to see is reeded, fluted, or slatted wood. This ornamental millwork can be used in more modern applications to walls or cabinets to add interest and repetition in a design.
Using naturally woven textures for seating, lighting, small decor items, and tables is also a hot trend that will continue in 2022. And, these naturally woven textures incorporate a lot of other design trends we plan to see in 2022, like earth tones, nature, and sustainability.
Incorporating delicate black metal has been, and continues to be, very popular for window frames, stair railing, and even furniture details. It can add a contrast to an otherwise bright white space and gives a modern minimalistic style.
Plastered wall finishes are an excellent way to add texture throughout your entire home. Bonus: plaster wall finishes generally last longer than paint jobs or wallpaper because once it dries, it hardens to a stone-like finish.
4. Neutral Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
Classic and in-demand: white and warmer neutrals (with a pop of color). This design style never goes out of style—and, it's perfect for the beach towns in Orange County. Start with a white, clean space (white walls, countertops, sinks, furniture, bedding) and add in natural woods (doors, bed and other furniture frames, fixtures, etc.), and finish off with light neutral colors for decor (pillows, lighting, artwork, curtains, rugs). But, don’t forget to add a pop of color with an accent pillow or art or even a funky chair to liven and cozy-up your home.
5. Nature and Earth Tone Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
Bringing the outdoors into your home using vibrant plant life and earth tones will continue to be a trend in 2022. Aside from looking beautiful, incorporating live plants and fresh flowers into your home can have a significant impact on your mood, improves memory retention and concentration, and reduces stress! If you don’t have a green thumb, consider decorating with floral patterns or photos of plant and animal life as an alternative way to incorporate nature. And, as we mentioned earlier, other natural elements can also be incorporated into your home, like real wood, stone, and naturally woven materials.
As for color, cool colors continue to trend out and the use of warm earth tone colors (deep greens, warm browns, terracotta oranges, blues) continues to trend up. These colors do exactly what it sounds like—they warm up your home while also adding a level of sophistication. To tie everything together, use brass, gold or black fixtures and frames.
6. Alternative Countertop Material Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
White marble countertops are always a classic winner, but other more durable countertop materials continue to be sought after particularly in high use places like the kitchen. Other natural stones like quartzite or dolomite are more durable than marble but still give a gorgeous organic look while porcelain countertops copy the look of marble almost identically. Other alternative materials that are trending include concrete, terrazzo, or the most popular quartz. Quartz is extremely dense and impermeable, so it makes a great kitchen counter surface. We like the look of simple solid or textural quartz that isn’t trying too hard to look like another stone, but instead honors its own man-made quality.
7. Minimalist Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
Minimalist designs can mean a few different things: Marie Kondo-ing your space, using only a few colors in your design pallet, or incorporating thoughtful negative space to make a home feel clean and uncluttered, etc. We also love that this is a great way to incorporate some of those sustainable materials and a minimal amount of unique hand-made functional decor instead of filling your space with many manufactured items. A few ideas: locally made kitchen table, hand-made ceramic dishes, wall art, or organic linen pillowcases. The possibilities are endless.
8. Multifunctional Space Trends in Interior Design in Orange County
Going on year three of a pandemic means we continue to work-from-home and school-from-home. We believe the need for multifunctional spaces is here to stay. If you haven’t already, it’s time to create a space for yourself, or for the kiddos, that’s both functional and enjoyable. To do this, here are a few tips to consider:
Make sure the decor you purchase meets your needs
Consider multifunctional furniture
Opt for an efficient layout
Skip oversized furniture
Make smart choices for storage
If the room is crowded, go for clean colors so it doesn’t feel cluttered
Consider hiring a professional designer to help

Interior Design: 7 Best Tips to Decorate Your Bedroom
Learn our 7 best interior design tips to decorate your bedroom. With these 7 decorating tips, your bedroom can become a sanctuary for you to rest and rejuvenate. It can help you wake up every morning feeling refreshed and ready for whatever comes your way!
Welcome to the next blog in our series, Interior Design: Best Tips to Decorate Your Home! We’re sharing all our best interior design tips to decorate your bedroom—one of our favorite rooms of the house. This space, if well designed, can become a sanctuary for you to rest and rejuvenate. It can help you wake up every morning feeling refreshed and ready for whatever comes your way, just by taking a few simple steps to freshen up your bedroom.
1. Stay True to Your Interior Design Style
When you're in your bedroom, you should feel happy and peaceful. Your bedroom should be a place where you can relax and rest. To evoke all those wonderful feelings, your space should feel like you. That is why our #1 design tip to decorate your bedroom is to stay true to you by staying true to your design style.
If design principles like balance, rhythm and repetition, contrast, and proportion, are well thought out, your bedroom will come together in a cohesive way no matter what design style you choose. Unsure what style is your favorite? Check out Interior Design Styles: A Guide to the 14 Most Popular Types. If none of those feel like you, that’s OK too. Show your designer a few decor items or design elements you like, and they can help you figure it out!
2. Configure a Balanced Room with Rhythm & Repetition
Rhythm and repetition is the idea of creating movement and harmony throughout your space with recurring patterns, colors, and different elements. Repetition can be achieved by subtly repeating lines or textures. Or, you can create more bold repetition through symmetry. Mirroring one side of the bedroom to the other side with matching end tables and accessories, along with bed decor and headboards, provides a calming aesthetic to a modern bedroom.
3. Create a Relaxing Space with a Layered Bed
There is nothing cozier or more relaxing in your bedroom than a layered bed! And the best part is, there is no right or wrong way to layer your bed. All you need is to have a few basic elements in place to create your layered masterpiece—your favorite cozy sheets, a comforter or duvet, decorative pillows, and a throw blanket (or two). Layering your bed is also a perfect opportunity for you to get creative by testing out different patterns, textures, and colors. 4. Choose Romantic Colors & Accent Pieces
A romantically designed space can look different for everyone. Ultimately, that romantic look can be very invigorating, and comes from choosing the right lighting, colors and accent pieces for your style and personality. One great way to do this is by styling your bedroom in a soft, neutral color pallet—cream, beige and soft pinks or pale peach—to give the space even more of a romantic, rosy feel. When it comes to accent pieces, try incorporating black elements, natural wood, fresh flowers, and sparkling lighting.
5. Use Properly Scaled & Proportioned Artwork
One of the most understated design concepts is properly scaled and proportioned artwork. Scale and proportion, two very common interior design terms, are what make a home or room warm and inviting. Oftentimes artwork is either too small or not the right orientation for wall space. Our pro tip is this: measure your wall space available, or better yet, tape out a possible art size on the wall to see how it feels.
In the bedroom we designed above, the bird prints work well in a fairly large size because the images themselves already have a lot of negative space. While these images generously fill the wall space, they still feel simple and thus create that peaceful feeling we were going for in this serene bedroom.
6. Paint an Accent Wall for Dramatic Effect
While this tip can be used in any room of your house, coupling a dark accent wall with a lot of white space can really set a dramatically sexy mood for your bedroom. Painting an accent wall in your bedroom can help you achieve the dreamy, dark effect without zapping all the light from your space. The accent wall can become the main focal point of your bedroom. It can be used to reinvent an otherwise stale space, and create a modern, sleek look.
7. Tie Everything Together with a Rug & Window Treatments
Our last tip to decorate your bedroom is to tie everything together using an area rug or an accent rug, and window treatments.
A good area rug can serve as the focal point of your space or simply create a soft and inviting foundation that anchors your bedroom furniture. Area and accent rugs can provide a pop of color, tie colors throughout the room together, help balance your bedroom, or even add a little texture.
Go a step further and finish off your space with window treatments. We love this analogy—Window treatments are like the jackets of interior design: They're often the last thing you add, but they can dress a room up or down. How true is that? Window treatments can make a room seem bigger, cozier, fancier, more modern or romantic…the list goes on. They can also add privacy or block out light, usually a much-needed functionality in a bedroom. Bottom line: don’t skip the window treatments (drapes, curtains, shades and blinds)—they might be the finishing touches you need to really transform your space and tie all your other design elements together!
